Birthday Dinner : for my Nico

I had to go big this year for Nico’s birthday and since last year I made him a serious cake I decided to go the savory route and make him a dinner feast! However, I always get a little nervous feeding my pup anything new (and especially people food) because he has such a sensitive tummy and a handful of food allergies. I’ve done a lot of research on what is and isn’t okay for our furry friends to eat, but when it comes to the interwebs how are you supposed to know what’s really real and what’s just a bunch of bologna?! When it boiled down to it I kept some of the basics in mind (like no onions, garlic, salt, oil, grapes, chocolate etc.) and left the rest up to my gut feeling, which is always 1) I want to feed him something healthy & nutritious, 2) something simple & fresh, 3) something he will like.

With all of that in mind I came up with a really simple and seasonal (!!) recipe for my little man’s big birthday meal. It’s sort of like a non-traditional Sweet Potato & Steak Hash. Check it out and treat your doggie this fall!

Ps — with a little salt & pepper and some fresh herbs this is a yummy meal for people too :)

Sweet Potato & Steak Hash

Ingredients :

– half a sweet potato, peeled and cubed

– one parsnip

– half an acorn squash, seeded and diced

– half of a steak

– 1 t olive oil or butter

How – to :

– pre – heat oven to 350° F

– Trim most of the fat off of the steak and cube into appropriate bit sizes for your pup

– cook the steak cubes over medium heat in a non stick pan – I used cast iron – avoid cooking oil and sprays. If needed use a little bit of butter. Cook until well done

– place veggies  on a rimmed baking sheet with a small about of olive oil or butter. I used about a teaspoon of olive oil

– bake in pre-heated oven for about 10 minutes until the potatoes are tender

– remove and let everything cool completely before feeding to your doggie
